Neil Bailey leads Wargrave to excellent opening win

In a thrilling exhibition of cricket on Saturday, the 13th of May, 2023, Wargrave CC's 4th XI emerged victorious over Crowthorne & Crown Wood CC's 4th XI in the Berkshire, Chilterns, and Mid Bucks League - BCL Division 4. The match was hosted at Wargrave C.C.

Wargrave CC, having won the toss, opted to bat first, a decision that would later prove decisive. Neil Bailey, the stalwart of the Wargrave CC side, was in sublime form. Bailey hit a score of 74, retiring not out through injury, and his performance was crucial in setting a formidable target. His knock, which included four boundaries, came off 100 balls, a testament to his calmness and ability to anchor the innings.

Bailey, partnered at the crease by Rajiv Dhallam, who contributed a commendable 40 runs, was instrumental in building a healthy total. Wargrave, with a steady pace, reached a final score of 168-5 in 40 overs. The partnership between Bailey and Dhallam was particularly impressive, providing stability after the early loss of Tom Tabrah. Dhallam was bowled by Katie Finucane, and his dismissal was a blow to Wargrave, but Bailey's presence ensured the scoreboard kept ticking over.

Crowthorne Crown Wood's bowlers bowled nicely, with Matthew Kelly and Katie Finucane claiming two wickets each. Despite their efforts, the solid batting from Wargrave, particularly Bailey's masterclass on a slow pitch, provided a challenging total for Crowthorne Crown Wood to chase.

Crowthorne Crown Wood innings began on a shaky note, with Jake Gibbings bowled by Fin Chisholm for a mere 4 runs. However, Stephanie Jones-Wright and Richard Hester fought back, contributing 40 and 74 runs respectively. Hester, the captain and wicketkeeper, remained not out, showcasing an impressive display of determination and skill.

Despite these efforts, Wargrave's bowling attack proved too strong. Fin Chisholm, Hitessh Lingala, and Jack Whitehead each claimed a wicket. Whitehead’s dismissal of Jones-Wright was a key turning point in the match, halting a burgeoning partnership and swinging momentum back to Wargrave. It was great to see the young players bowling with such skill.

In the end, Crowthorne Crown Wood fell short, managing to score 151-3 in their 40 overs. Wargrave's bowling attack, supported by Bailey's outstanding batting performance, was instrumental in securing the win.

With this win, Wargrave CC's 4th XI bagged 35 game points, while Crowthorne & Crown Wood CC's 4th XI were left with 8. Wargrave's decision to bat first, combined with Neil Bailey's sterling performance and the effective bowling efforts, proved a successful strategy in this league match.
