Great effort from Wargrave with lots of new and young players stepping up to perform against a strong opposition team

In a thrilling Berkshire Cricket League Division 4 clash at Wargrave Cricket Club, the 4th XI of Wargrave CC showcased great determination but ultimately came up short against a strong Rangers CC's 2nd XI. The match, held on Saturday, 24th June 2023, witnessed an intense battle between the two teams, with Rangers CC emerging victorious.

After winning the toss, Rangers CC's 2nd XI elected to bat first, hoping to set a challenging target for their opponents. However, they got off to a shaky start when Vinay Acharya was bowled by Praveen Jetti without scoring. Rajnish Singh followed soon after, falling lbw to Hitessh Lingala for just 2 runs.

Arun Kumar Manoharan then steadied the innings with an impressive knock of 44 runs, including nine boundaries. He found support from Bharath Kumar Banala, who contributed a valuable 35 runs before being caught by Hitessh Lingala off the bowling of Steve Forster (on his debut for Wargrave). Manish Mali (21) and Seyon Rajeev-Lazar (19) made useful contributions to guide Rangers CC to a competitive total of 199 all out in their allotted 40 overs. Wargrave really stuck at the task in the field, with excellent fielding supporting a strong bowling performance. Special mention to Jack Whitehead who took his first wicket in senior cricket and bowled excellently.

Chasing a target of 200 runs, Wargrave CC's opening batsman Tom Tabrah got the team off to a solid start with 19 runs. But the team suffered setbacks as wickets fell at regular intervals. Dave Jeary top-scored with a patient 38 runs, while Hitessh Lingala contributed a quickfire 26 runs. However, the relentless bowling by Seyon Rajeev-Lazar, who finished with impressive figures of 5 for 22, created significant trouble for Wargrave CC.

Despite their best efforts, Wargrave CC's batting lineup struggled to maintain momentum, and they ultimately finished with a total of 141 for 9 in their 40 overs, falling short by 58 runs.

While Wargrave CC's valiant effort fell short, they can take pride in their disciplined bowling performance and fighting spirit. Rangers CC's victory was a testament to their all-round performance, with key contributions from their batsmen and an exceptional bowling display by Seyon Rajeev-Lazar.

Both teams displayed great sportsmanship and entertained the enthusiastic crowd gathered at Wargrave Cricket Club. The match proved to be a memorable encounter in the Berkshire Cricket League Division 4, with Rangers CC emerging as deserving winners. Wargrave CC, on the other hand, will look to regroup and come back stronger in their upcoming fixtures, drawing inspiration from their collective efforts.

As the league progresses, both Wargrave CC and Rangers CC will strive to build on their performances and aim for success in their respective divisions. The Berkshire, Chilterns and Mid Bucks League continues to provide thrilling cricketing action, delighting fans and players alike with its competitive encounters.
