Wargrave fail to capitalise on a strong start with the bat

Woodcote CC's 2nd XI emerged victorious in a gripping clash against Wargrave CC's 4th XI in a Berkshire Cricket League Division 4 encounter held at Woodcote. While Wargrave started their innings strongly, their batting prowess faded away against a determined Woodcote bowling attack.

Having won the toss, Wargrave elected to bat first, seeking to set a challenging target for their opponents. Opening batsman Tom Tabrah got off to an impressive start, displaying excellent shot selection and timing. Tabrah's 33 runs, including five boundaries, provided a solid foundation for Wargrave. Sam Beale joined him and continued the momentum, contributing a well-crafted 34 runs, including four boundaries. Sam demonstrated excellent skills as an opener, a position he doesn't normally play.

Nandan Sant provided a crucial partnership with Beale, playing an aggressive innings of 36 runs off just 39 deliveries, which included four boundaries. However, after the dismissal of Beale, Wargrave's batting lineup faced a series of setbacks. Woodcote's bowlers, led by Peter Roberts and Jez Mayo, exerted pressure on the Wargrave batsmen, resulting in a steady fall of wickets.

Despite the efforts of Trevor Bennett, who remained unbeaten on 9 runs, and some late boundaries from Praveen Jetti and Vernon Butcher, Wargrave could only muster a total of 138 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 40 overs. Woodcote's disciplined bowling attack, with Peter Roberts claiming three wickets and Jez Mayo taking three as well, kept the pressure on throughout the innings.

In pursuit of their target, Woodcote CC showed determination and composure. Opener Jez Mayo played a pivotal role, remaining unbeaten with a composed knock of 54 runs, including six boundaries. He found support from Gary De Pinchart, who contributed a crucial 52 runs, smashing ten boundaries in the process.

Despite some tight spells from Praveen Jetti (picking up two wickets) and Rajiv Dhallam, Woodcote managed to chase down the target with relative ease, reaching 140 runs for the loss of 3 wickets in 29.3 overs. The victory for Woodcote was a testament to their batsmen's resilience and ability to handle pressure.

Wargrave's bowlers, although unable to defend their total, displayed commendable efforts. Praveen Jetti took two wickets, while Rajiv Dhallam claimed one wicket. However, their efforts were not enough to turn the tide in Wargrave's favour.

Woodcote CC's 2nd XI emerged victorious with 35 points, while Wargrave CC's 4th XI could only gather 5 points from the match. The result showcased Woodcote's ability to perform under pressure and highlighted the areas for improvement for Wargrave, particularly in sustaining their early momentum.

Both teams deserve credit for their competitive spirit and commitment to the game all played in lovely surroundings and sunshine. Wargrave look forward to their next game at home against West Reading.
