A young Wargrave team blooded some new players but came up short against the Reading opposition.
Put into the field first Wargrave started in style with James getting a wicket with only his second delivery. Tight bowling from Finlay and Xavier meant scoring was hard for Reading and then after the first 6 we've seen of the season, Matthew helpfully picked up a wicket. Eddie and Ash also chipped in with a wicket each, and Max kept his run of a wicket an over going so far this season with 2 wickets (assisted generously by batsman playing on). So that left Reading with a gettable target of 246 for 6.
After a solid start from Xavier and Ash, wickets tumbled regularly through the middle of the Wargrave innings, meaning the gettable target was never really close to being got. There was some good running on display though - some great quick singles from Sam and Finlay's batting (good clear calling boys), and then some nice boundaries from Xavier, Ash and Max meant the score of 224 for 8 was achieved.
A special mention to Jonathan who was playing his first game for the club and played some nice shots in his innings. And well done to Lubin for giving bowling a go, even though he was a bit unsure to start with.
Areas for improvement - backing up in fielding and batting, and playing straight to balls that are on target to hit the stumps. If the boys (or parents) don't understand what that means then the coaches will be more than happy to assist on a Friday.
So we came up a little short today, but our u9 team was made up almost entirely of u8s, and we've given a few more boys some experience of match cricket, which I'm sure will pay dividends in the long run.
