3 run victory in tight league game

Wargrave entertained Emmbrook and Bearwood in our 4th league outing of the season.

New captain for the night, stephen hayes, won the toss and decided to bat on what looked a belter of a wicket at wargrave with the sun shinning and a good crowd to support both sides.

Wargrave opened up with Woods and Shamsi, the former hitting 2 of the first 5 balls for 4 and then seeing his leg stump disappear! This seemed to set the tone as wargrave scored quickly, emmbrook bowlers dropping wides and then the odd magic ball that would account for a batsmen. We lost wickets at regular intervals and found the scoreboard reading 67 for 7 off 11 overs, we were in danger of not using up the overs, however an excellent stand between Alex Leigh and andrew hattey brought the flow of wickets to a halt as the pair batted out overs picking up the singles and odd boundary, we were able to close our innings on 92 all out in the 19th over, with alex Leigh top scoring with and excellent 20, slightly below par for a good wicket but a decent reflection of how well emmbrook bowled.

Wargrave knew they would have to bowl the opposition out to win this game and opened up with Moss and Atkinson and brough early rewards with Moss taking the opener caught and bowled. Good rotation of bowling brought further wickets for Atkinson and woods but it was the introduction of slow bowler hattey that turned the game in our favor, taking the pace of the ball to great effect and backed up with impressive cathes from withers and another atkinson special Hattey bowled his 4 overs for 15 and picked up 4 wickets, this brought the game to very close finish with alex leigh bowling the last over, Emmbrook required 4 runs to win and Wargrave 1 wicket! Third ball of the 20th over saw the ball spill in the air to cover and shamsi bagged the catch to see wargrave to the win.

A great game of cricket and the best fielding display of the season so far, good progress from earlier games saw our fielders backing up and keeping thier concentration in the field, relected in the 4 great catches we took. Very pleasing to see younger players really stepping up in this game and making the difference, good confidence boost for games to come.

Many thanks to Ken Clark for umpire duties and all the parents that game along to support the side.
