An Interview with the skipper

Welcome to a new series that will occur every once in a while. It is an in-depth sit-down interview with a key member of the Wargrave 3s side. This will give everyone the chance to get to know the squad. I have at no point paraphrased or edited any answers given. Mainly because it’s impossible to paraphrase or edit something that didn’t actually happen.

FL: I felt it was only right to start this series off with the skipper Scott Walker. Welcome Scott, how are you today?
SW: Yes.

Okay, brilliant. I assume most will know of you already, but why don’t you introduce yourself a little for the readers?
I’m Scott, former 1st team captain and current leading club wicket burglar. At one point could possibly have been considered the angriest person to ever walk the earth. But that was me in my heyday. I’ve settled down into a leadership role in the 3rd team now that I’m of retirement age and collecting my state pension. You can usually find me at the bar despite not buying myself, or anyone else, a beer in 7 years.

Trust me, we know. There were a few changes pre-game to the side, which one do you think had the greatest positive effect on the squad?
Not having Huw around.

Brutal honesty from skipper there. How about any of the players that came into the squad?
Emma came in and did a great job picking up a couple wickets today, even ignoring her extended break from the game, she was excellent. There was also a nice moment of having all three of the Hattey men playing in the game together today. Dunno how, but Jill still managed to have the second greatest impact on the game out of the lot of them.

Couple exiled 1st teamers joined us for the day. Did they manage to make any impact on the game?
Abysmal. Thought they could just walk into Thames Valley Division 7 and run the show. This is where the real men play. Bowers, no idea what he was playing at heaving across the line. Don’t even get me started on Toby today.

Understandable dismay towards Bowers there, I don’t particularly like him either. However, Toby took 4 wickets. He’s young and surely a very exciting player for the 1st XI?
At his age I already had at least 350 Berkshire league wickets. He’s got nothing on what I was.

There were some great bowling performances. Wickets for SuperHands, Emma and Toby. Any other comments on the bowling performance?
The opening bowlers. Rimmer and Freddie. Where do I begin…

Oh, you’re too kind…
They were awful. No consistency whatso…

Sorry, we’re gunna have to move on. Running out of time. The batting performance. It looked as if you were close to bottling the chase at one point?
As you can tell, I’m incredibly positive in general. But, this just wasn’t good enough. The top order, bar Andrew Hattey, just fell apart. No patience and the pressure got to them. Especially Bowers and that Toby. Swanning around like they owned the place.

Thankfully the side managed to get itself over the line. It did look precarious at 66-5 when Mike was out. What did you think the difference was that led to the game being finished just 3 overs later?
I’d say the cool head that helped Andrew Hattey to carry his bat through to the end that saved us. The composure he showed was excellent and really got us over the line.

Oh. Just Andrew? You wouldn’t say anyone else made an effect on the innings? Maybe someone who batted at 7? Potentially may have hit 3 boundaries in 4 balls that may have swung things?
No, no. Just Andrew really…

This interviews over
But I thought we had to discuss the season so far?

I SAID IT WAS OVER

Next up in the series will be our very own English born and bred Welshman Huw “boom boom” Thomas.
