Royal Ascot Ease Past Youthful Wargrave Despite Sterling Cameo

Thomas Tabrah15 Jun - 05:45

Youthful Wargrave side shows spirit but falls short against experienced Royal Ascot XI as Raheem Sterling’s surprise visit lights up the day.

On a warm summer’s afternoon at the scenic Locks Ride Ground, Royal Ascot’s 4th XI cruised to a commanding nine-wicket victory over a youthful and spirited Wargrave side in Division 9C of the Thames Valley Cricket League. While Wargrave’s mixed XI of adults and juniors showed commendable resolve, they were ultimately outgunned by an experienced and disciplined Ascot outfit.

Adding a touch of stardust to the occasion was England footballer Raheem Sterling, who made a surprise appearance at the ground. The Premier League star was happy to mingle with players and spectators alike, with several young Wargrave cricketers thrilled to meet him — a memory they’ll likely treasure more than the result.

Winning the toss and opting to bat, Wargrave laboured to 148 for 7 from their 40 overs. Tim Pryke anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 47, while Mike Andrews added a fluent 46. However, regular wickets stifled momentum, with Ascot’s Cedric Cooray (2-15 from 8 overs) and Raf Bocchio (2-30) both impressing with the ball.

In reply, Ascot made short work of the chase. Openers Toby Dodwell-Bennett (51) and captain Elliot Mills (59*) laid a dominant platform with a 118-run stand, punishing loose bowling on a good batting surface. Despite a lone breakthrough from Advik Gupta, Wargrave’s bowlers were unable to apply consistent pressure, and Ascot eased past the target in under 19 overs.

It was a testing day in the field for Wargrave, though they remained committed throughout. Special mention goes to a high catch at long on from Jasmer Gill and tidy work behind the stumps from Tom Tabrah, but the bowling unit struggled to contain Ascot’s confident stroke-makers.

This fixture offered Wargrave’s juniors valuable exposure against seasoned opposition, and they responded with heart and determination. Though the result did not go their way, the club can take pride in the development opportunities being provided — and the once-in-a-lifetime chance to share a boundary with Raheem Sterling.
