Wargrave 4th XI endured a difficult afternoon at Oak Tree Farm as Bracknell United 6th XI claimed a convincing 144-run victory on a scorchingly hot day in Division 9B.

After winning the toss and electing to field, Wargrave's youthful side worked hard on a challenging surface that offered plenty for bowlers. The pitch, stripped bare of grass, quickly deteriorated under the heat, producing uneven bounce for the seamers and increasingly sharp turn for the spinners. Despite the conditions, Wargrave fielded energetically and created chances throughout the innings.

Bracknell recovered from an early setback to post 228 all out in 38 overs. Raghu Pali (35), Bhushan Vuppula (38), Praveen Voola (39) and Bhanu Botcha (41) all made useful contributions, but Wargrave remained in the contest thanks to disciplined bowling and excellent fielding. Freddie Tabrah was particularly unfortunate to finish with just one wicket after several chances went begging, his accurate spell of 1-28 deserving far greater reward. Kit Jeary cleaned up the tail impressively to finish with 3-23, while Rowan Searle claimed two wickets and there were two sharp run outs from the fielding side.

Chasing 229 was always going to be difficult on a wicket becoming increasingly treacherous. The surface offered extravagant turn and variable bounce, making strokeplay hazardous. Wargrave's innings never gained momentum as wickets fell regularly against a disciplined Bracknell attack.

The exception was Dave Jeary, who produced a determined and stubborn innings of 29 from 65 balls. Jeary dug in admirably, occupying the crease while wickets tumbled around him and he was eventually the last man out, having almost carried his bat through the innings and providing the only prolonged resistance.

Kit Jeary offered useful support with 19, but Wargrave slipped from 52-3 to 66-9 as Bracknell's spinners and seamers exploited the deteriorating pitch. Bhanu Botcha starred with 3-6, while Praveen Voola ripped through the lower order to claim 4-10.

Wargrave were eventually dismissed for 84 in 27.2 overs. While the result was emphatic, there were positives to take from the visitors' spirited fielding display, the promise shown by several young players, and a number of bowling performances that deserved better fortune than the scorebook ultimately reflected.
