Wargrave 4th XI produced their best performance of the 2026 season so far in sweltering conditions on Kings Field, overwhelming Reading Lions by 169 runs in an entertaining Thames Valley Division 9B contest played in excellent spirit.

On a scorching afternoon with a flat pitch and lightning-fast outfield, Wargrave’s batsmen made full use of ideal batting conditions after captain Tom Tabrah elected to bat first. The innings was built around a magnificent unbeaten century from Tiernan Hick, playing his first match for some time. Hick’s chanceless 106 from 92 balls was a model of timing and placement, featuring 18 boundaries and barely a false stroke as he dominated the Lions attack.

He shared a superb opening stand of 168 with Tabrah, whose fluent 67 from 64 balls laid the platform for the late assault. With the square hard and true and the ball racing across the dry outfield, the pair punished anything short, rotating strike calmly while steadily increasing the tempo. With Hick retiring not out after 25 overs, Tabrah fell shortly afterwards being lbw to Santhosh Kumar shortly after reaching his half-century.

The arrival of Jonah Holloway only accelerated the scoring. Holloway struck a brisk 19 from 16 balls before Angus Bryers added an aggressive 23. Jonathan Colbourne then capped an excellent all-round day with an unbeaten 43 from only 26 deliveries, including a huge straight six that disappeared beyond the sightscreen.

There was also a warm welcome for new Wargrave player Andrew Hurn, while Ally Holloway quietly supported Colbourne at the close as Wargrave finished on an imposing 304 for seven from their 40 overs.

Reading Lions’ bowlers toiled gamely in the heat, with Mahesh Hondad taking two wickets, but the conditions heavily favoured the batsmen. The match itself was played throughout with good humour, and the excellent tea prepared by Wargrave’s players was warmly appreciated by both sides during the interval.

Any hopes of an unlikely chase quickly disappeared once Wargrave’s varied bowling attack found rhythm. Angus Bryers struck early, removing both Shivam Kesharwani and VasanthaKumar in an impressive opening spell, while Hurn marked his debut with a wicket when Tanay Bhandarkar was bowled attempting an ambitious drive.

Reading Lions never fully recovered from slipping to 24 for three. Saurav Sivaram and Sunil Kolvekar briefly resisted, but Wargrave’s bowlers shared the workload effectively and maintained relentless pressure. Trevor Bennett bowled beautifully, claiming two for nine from four overs, mixing accuracy with subtle changes of pace on a surface that had begun to tire slightly in the afternoon heat.

One of the highlights of the innings came during Jonah Holloway’s lively spell. Having already dismissed Prashanth Pappuri courtesy of a neat catch from his mother Ally Holloway behind the stumps, Jonah nearly achieved a memorable hat-trick when he removed Santhosh Kumar with the very next delivery. Ally’s second sharp catch in consecutive balls drew loud applause from teammates and spectators alike.

Aidan Kelly then wrapped up the tail with a miserly spell of one for six, while Colbourne added a wicket of his own to complete an outstanding personal contribution. Sarvesh Gaikwad fought gamely for 22, but Reading Lions were eventually dismissed for 135 in the 35th over.

Wargrave’s victory was built on contributions throughout the side: Hick’s elegant century, Tabrah’s authoritative support, Colbourne’s late flourish and a disciplined team bowling performance in which every bowler played a role.

Most importantly, it was a day played in the right spirit — competitive cricket under blazing sunshine, followed by shared conversation around the tea table as both teams reflected on an enjoyable afternoon at Wargrave.
