Wargave v Thatcham, away

A strong start by Thatcham on an Australian-style park pitch under a blazing sun was reduced to a dangerous total of 247 for Wargrave to chase – on a breaking wicket.

Emerging from the latest in a recent batch of 'longest changing room corridors' facilities, Wargave won the toss and took to the field. They toiled for an hour to make a breakthrough as young openers ? and ? Hit an enterprising opening stand of 80. Dan Colbourne got lucky in his first over to bag both batsmen, one an LBW call that cut back.

Thatcham didn't appear to have strength in depth after a loose chop on from Walker removed a potential hitter at 3.

But a 15-year-old batting at 5 hit an excellent 65, including two crisp hooks off his nose from beamers, though had issues running between the wickets. Colbourne struck again on his return, claiming 5-65 off 13 overs. Wargrave struggled in the field on a fast outfield and a wicket that revealed inconsistencies late in Thatcham's innings. Thatcham posted a challenging 247 and a call for the heavy roller was talked about. But conveniently for the home side the groundsman wasn't around with the key. Until the game resumed.

Wargave's chase started with big shots from the go – Moss and Jos Colbourne looking set before Moss mishit to to mid-off. Amor came in and struck a powerful 50 with a new bat - a quality knock that ended with the loss of leg stump, and Colbourne continued with Bowers at a steady 5 to 6 runs an over. Bowers struck three emphatic sixes while Colbourne continued stroking the ball around, getting a reprieve after a poor drop at backward square leg.

Thatcham's predominantly left arm attack probed at times and their fielders threw themselves around on skin shredding outfield (while dropping three easy catches), but the threat from the wicket disappated and the runs were flowing.

Colbourne was there through two big partnerships and got to 96 with Bowers on 46, needing 5 for the win. But could have hit a landmark with one hit, but as if by request, the bowler dropped a long hop for Colbourne to smash the winning runs high over mid wicket to raise his century. Great win for Wargrave - who look a batting side - by 8 wickets and with 8 overs to spare.

Another venue with little atmosphere, bar the sight of a tractor tyre being rolled down a hill and cream cheese and stem honey sandwiches?
