Wargrave CC 2nd XI vs Cove CC 3rd XI

For the second successive week Wargrave were met by glorious sunshine as they made their trip to the scenic home of Cove CC. With the team in deep pre-match discussion, despite a frighteningly low accumulative IQ for a large group of males, skipper Walker was once again forced to place his faith in top tosser Townson. Wargrave win. Wargrave to bat first.

Wargrave started their innings briskly. Davies (24) breezed through the nervous nines, with partner in crime J. Colbourne (34) equally making light of a pitch described, intelligently, by Lunn as “not good” for batting. Cheers Chris. Farmiloe, with number one of five, was first to strike for Cove removing Davies. Townson (0) fell quickly without troubling the scorers, J. Colbourne followed soon after. If you are interested in Lunn’s (29) innings, see last week’s report (I can’t be bothered to copy and paste). I think we all know what happened.

D. Colbourne (0) followed by Lanch (0), who might have defied mathematics and actually increased his batting average, took the long walk in consecutive balls. Clark (12) put up a fight about as strong as his physique would suggest, while S. Colbourne (0) was heard somewhere chatting about how “I just want to be like my uncle Dan”. Walker (Unknown. Interesting) and Morton (1*)… also batted. Bowers (46) was once again the star of the show, the last man out 4 short of his 50. Bowers Snr’s comments on that fact? “A shame, but at least it save’s me £10”. At least there was a silver lining for somebody. 171/10. Tea.

Wargrave struck the first blow of the Cove innings. Clark (2-41) removed Gudge (6) with a sumptuous away swinger scooped up by Lunn behind the stumps. From then on, it was all Cove. Smith (32) and Nilanka “Spell That” Kodithuwakku (62) took hold of proceedings and smeared their dominance all over it, causing the non-scorers of the Wargrave innings to feel very sheepish. Except for Lanch (0-13), who at first slip didn’t have time to ponder on his innings, as he was engrossed in a wise speech from Lunn about how “it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity” that gets to him.

To compound the misery on the Wargrave side, Cove’s number 5’s (52*) weighed in with some big runs after Smith fell. Unfortunately his name had not been noted down, so well batted “Unsure”. Fancy giving Bowers some tips on how to be not out fifty at the end of the innings? Captain Walker (2-32) and his dancing feet refused to go down with a fight, removing Kodithuwakku and Alexander (0) quicker then the skipper can Two-step. However this was all in vain as Cove crossed the line with more than enough overs to spare, earning them selves a 6-wicket victory.

Wargrave Man of the Match: No one*

*Therefor last week’s winner automatically receives the award. Congratulations Freddie Lanch.
