A bold call for the season opener but one that paid off handsomely.

With the ball first, Wargrave were excellent. Disciplined, purposeful bowling put Hurst under pressure throughout their 16 overs, and the team ran through 7 wickets, a superb collective effort. In pairs cricket, of course, wickets come with a sting attached: each one costs the batting side 5 runs off their total, meaning those 7 dismissals wiped 35 runs off Hurst's score before they'd even left the field. That's the kind of cricket that wins games.

Hurst finished their innings at 103/7 off 16 overs, and with the wicket deductions applied, a net score of 268, a respectable outcome, but very much chaseable.

Now, it would be remiss not to mention the extras. Regular readers of these reports, and yes, that is becoming a theme, will note that 35 wides and 10 no-balls (at 2 runs per extra) gave Hurst a rather generous top-up to their total. The bowling itself was strong; it was just accompanied by the occasional gift. Something to keep working on lads. The wickets were brilliant. The wides, slightly less so.

With the bat, Wargrave were composed, calm, and utterly businesslike. Batters protected their stumps, rotated the strike, and kept the scoreboard ticking over in exactly the fashion pairs cricket rewards. The innings closed at 123/1 off 16 overs, only a single wicket lost, which meant just a 5-run deduction and a commanding net score of 318.

Hurst's bowlers, to their credit, kept trying — but the 56 wides and 28 no-balls from their end, made it a tall order to recover from. So while Wargrave were doing the work with the bat, Hurst's extras column was doing a fair bit of heavy lifting too.
